The Crucible Book Review From My Prospective

Arthur Miller's play The Crucible was written during 1952 giving the reader a brief information of on how the Salem witch trials were like. The play begins with Betty failing to speak due to illness.The play goes ahead as her father gets worried and calls the doctor since, the doctor could not find what was wrong with her he assumed that she was sick due to unnatural causes. The play goes forward and reverend Hale comes and begins to hunt for the witch and the tragedy begins. The tragedy continued many people got arrested and some like John Proctor died with their truth .A big part of the themes of the play The Crucible include how, why and who determines what is normal and what is not in a given society, and should one just follow them. At the point in the end of the play reverend Hale tries to make the people lie and save their life. It was more okay to lie and save your life rather than dying with the truth. Since society had confirmed the idea of save your life using lies rather than dying with your respect, dignity and moral values. reverend Hale said “ Life, woman, life is God's most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it.” (pg 132). The above quote of reverend Hale from the play illustrate how much society had valued conformity more than morality. This makes it clear that once us those in power decide something is good for a society we can't easily change it even if we know that it is bad. Besides that this also shows how dangerous a society without secularism can be because if secularism was there every thing would not go the direction it went. At the point around the end of the play John proctor is stuck in between dying for the truth and saving his life using a lie. Reverend Hale and others tried to make him conform what was considered to be normal by that society. John Proctor accepts their advice, and decides to confess.They then asked him to sign his name he refused and torn the paper while saying “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (pg143). According John Proctor his name is more expensive than his life but according to the society that he was in his life was more powerful than his name. As result of not conforming to society's norm his was punished as someone who is bad, and hang. In the real word things like this happen almost at every point of history beyond the way one can think. This could be related to many things happened and are happening and will happen in the future. A few examples of things that happened are : prosecution of people due their sexual and gender identity, the war against secularism , and the increase of fundalism globally. All this have many things that connect them to each other and also to the play. But the most important thing they have in common are they both deal with conformity, rules and secularism. Over time history has witnessed that when the balance of secularism fails and society becomes controlled by religion then diversity becomes about difference and equality becomes about equivalence. A big part of the themes of the play The Crucible include how why and who determines what is normal what is not in a given society and should one just follow them. The theme is connected to the play because the play is focused on the war between morality and conformity and what is more powerful. This could be related to many things that have happened in the past , are happening now , and or will happen in the future. A few examples of things that happened are : prosecution of people due their sexual and gender identity, the war against secularism , and the increase of fundalism globally. All this have many things that connect them to each other and also to the play. But the most important thing they have in common are they all deal with conformity, rules and secularism, and morality. Today this world has many movements at different parts of it to stop hate part of this war against hate involved things like not teaching children what think but instead teaching them how to think?. Arthur miller answered many questions of human beings but he left the world with many questions like what should children learn and what should parents and society in general teach the young ?.
